BRIAN WILLSON (percussion)
DOMINIC DUVAL(bass)
YUKO FUJIYAMA (piano)

The eclectic percussionist, musical director and classical conductor Brian Willson formed this trio with long-time associates Dominic Duval  and Yuko Fujiyama to explore his life-time interest in free improvisatory music. Willson also recently recorded a series of duets with Pauline Oliveros.  His trio album, Things Heard Unheard, has recently been released on the Deep Listening Label.  In a way you could call this music classic free jazz.  Better yet, this is music that defies classification; truly free.

Dominic Duval is one of the finest and most prolific bassists on the contemporary scene, having played and recorded with some of the greatest names in jazz and new music.  Duval's continuing tenure with pianist Cecil Taylor's trio has cemented his reputation as one of contemporary music's more important figures.  Duval is comfortable and can be seen performing in any number of genres, including modern classical, jazz or music which defies classification . The bassist has performed and recorded with such notables as saxophonists Joe McPhee, Ivo Perelman, Glen Spearman, and Mark Whitecage, composer Pauline Oliveros, trombonist Steve Swell, pianists Joseph Scianni and Michael Stevens, trumpeter Herb Robertson, and drummers Paul Lytton and David S. Ware, among others. Duval leads and co-leads a number of ensembles himself, including the critically-acclaimed C.T. String Quartet, Trio X, and "The Wedding Band."  The Dominic Duval String Ensemble. Duval's solo bass CD, Night Bird Inventions, was a Top 10 pick in the Coda Magazine critics poll, and his String Ensemble CD, State of the Art, was chosen one of the year's best in the Jazziz Magazine poll.  Mr. Duval can be seen on tour through out the United States, Europe, Canada and Asia.

Yuko Fujiyama is a native of Sapporo, Japan, where she studied and majored in classical music. In the mid-80's, upon being moved by the music of pianist Cecil Taylor, she moved to the United States.  In the early 90s, Yuko began performing her original improvisational music, first in New York City, and then worldwide. In addition to performing with a diverse range of musicians, including Ikue Mori, William Parker, and the late Wilber Morris, she leads her own quartet, two trios,
and performs in duet with violinist Mark Feldman. "Re-Entry" and "Song Cycle" are her latest available recordings, on the CIMP and Boxholder labels, respectively.

Description: Please join us at Slought Foundation on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 from 8:00-10:00pm for a live concert by McPhee and Duval, with Joe McPhee on alto/tenor saxophone and pocket trumpet, and Dominic Duval on Hutchins bass.

A rare doubler - equally at ease on brass and woodwind - Joe McPhee (b. 1939) was first heard on Clifford Thorton's 'Freedom and Unity' (Third World, 1967). Founding the CjR recording label in 1969 with artist Craig Johnson, McPhee (as a leader) recorded 'Underground Railroad', 'Trinity', and 'Nation Time'. By 1974, Swiss entrepreneur Werner X. Uehlinger, so engaged by McPhee's underground recordings, started Hat Hut records to release his work, eventually releasing the seminal 'Tenor' solo concert in 1976. Following early collaborations with Pauline Oliveros, McPhee's interests in extended technique and electronics were influenced by the theories of "deep listening." Re-emerging in the 1990s, McPhee has attracted wider attention from the North American creative jazz community, recording prodigiously on recording labels such as CIMP, Okkadisk, Music & Arts, and Victo, as well as beginning a fruitful relationship with Chicago reedman Ken Vandermark. Most recently, he has recorded with the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet, Trio X, DJ Spooky, Oliveros' Deep Listening Band, and Mats Gustafsson's The Thing.

Few musicians are more dedicated to the principles of free improvisation than bassist Dominic Duval. He has a prodigious technique; Duval plays the bass like an elongated guitar, with fast lines and textures. Rather than provide a low-pitched harmonic/rhythmic foundation, Duval more often than not plays like a horn player, interacting freely with other members of the ensemble. Best know for his extensive work with Cecil Taylor, Duval has also recorded with Trio X, Marshall Allen, Mark Whitecage, Frank Lowe, and John Oswald.
